3 Rivers Tournament Champs - January 2008 - Pittts, Pa

The Clarence Mustangs Squirt Major hockey team won the Three Rivers Cup Tournament, held January 18th – 21st in Pittsburgh, PA, with a 2-1 shootout win over the Arctic Foxes from Pittsburgh in the Championship Game.

The Mustangs won their first contest against the Humber Valley Sharks 2-1.  Matthew Santora scored from Bryce Kuhn to open the scoring.  The Sharks tied the game, and Chris Harvey kept it tied at 1, with a huge save on a Shark’s penalty shot.  Jack Attea netted the game winner from Eric Grupp and Dominic Perna.   With very strong defensive support from CJ Carle, Ian Fitzgerald, Jared DePerio and Dylan Tomasulo, the Mustangs were able to hold on for the win.

In game two against the Cleveland Chargers, the Mustangs came out flying and dominated the action, but were unable to beat the Chargers goaltender until mid-way through the second period when a shot from the point by CJ Carle found the back of the net.  Harrison Oates scored the Mustangs second goal, assisted by Dylan Tomasulo,  but one was all the Mustangs needed as Garrett Varisco and Chris Harvey teamed up for the shut out.

In game 3 the Mustangs lost 3-0 to the Pittsburgh Arctic Foxes.

In the finals, the Mustangs faced the team that beat them 6 hours earlier.  After a scoreless first, Santora scored assisted by Grupp and Oates.  The Mustangs held the 1-0 lead, but with less than 1 second remaining, the Mustangs short handed and the Foxes net empty, the Foxes tied the game sending it to 5 minute sudden death overtime.

The scored remained tied and the game came down to a shootout.

Mustangs’ goalie, Chris Harvey stopped all 5 shootout attempts while Andrew Kempton scored the lone shootout goal giving the Clarence Mustangs the win!

Rochester Redwings Round Robin Champs

The Clarence Mustangs Squirt Major hockey team won the Rochester Redwings Round Robin Tournament, held September 8th & 9th, with a 3-0 win over Tonawanda in the Championship Game.

The Mustangs went undefeated over the weekend with a convincing win over the host Rochester Redwings 3-0 in game one.   The line of Dominic Perna, Kevin Rechlin and Andrew Kempton accounted for 2 goals and 4 assists.  Mike McMahon netted the third Mustang goal.  With very strong defensive support from Jack Attea, CJ Carle, Ian Fitzgerald and Dylan Tomasulo, Chris Harvey was able to record the shutout.

In a very pivotal game against a strong Monroe County team the Mustangs found themselves down 5-1 midway though the second, but the never say die Mustangs stampeded back with 4 unanswered goals to end the second period tied at 5.  Eric Grupp deposited a backhand shot in the top of the net off a pass from Matthew Santora to start the comeback.  The Mustangs scored once in the third and held off Monroe for the 6-5 win.  The line of Harrison Oates, Mike McMahon and Bryce Kuhn accounted for 5 of the 6 Mustang goals, two while shorthanded.

In a total team effort the Mustangs went on to win their second tournament this year beating a very tough Tonawanda team.  Chris Harvey pitched his second shutout of the tournament while Erich Thur and Griffen LoVullo applied the pressure.  Harrison Oates and Andrew Kempton scored while the defense played another very strong game.
